THE EXORCIST (2023): Character Actress Ann Dowd Joins the Cast of Upcoming Horror Film

Ann Dowd At Premiere

Forthcoming Horror Picture Brings Ann Dowd On Board

Ann Dowd will be appearing in director David Gordon Green‘s upcoming continuation of the legendary horror film, The Exorcist.

The great character actress, Ann Dowd, appeared in one of last year’s most powerful supporting turns in the little seen gem about two families coming together after a violent tragedy, Mass. There’s little doubt that her next role in the 2023 due horror picture, The Exorcist, will not slip under the radar, though. That’s because she’s joining a terrific project which includes the legendary Ellen Burstyn who appeared as Chris MacNeil in the original 1973 film, The Exorcist. Burstyn will once again play the character that helped launch her career, MacNeil. Also appearing in the new follow up to the horror classic will be Leslie Odom Jr.

Dowd won much acclaim when she appeared in the 2012 masterpiece, Compliance. Dowd’s character in that film, who is hoodwinked by a telephone prankster, was one of the most delicate and fascinating ones of Dowd’s prestigious career. The aforementioned 2012 film was one of the more critically successful independent movies of the year it was released. Though Dowd has played in several terrific parts over the years, all bets were off when she hit the ball out of the park in last year’s Mass where Dowd was playing a character who had to speak about her deceased son who had initiated gun violence which led to the death of innocent people. Dowd redefined on-screen acting in a performance which was one for the record books. Had she been nominated for an Oscar, more people would have seen how truly great she was in the picture.

David Gordon Green is known for rejuvenating the Halloween franchise and for directing Jamie Lee Curtis in her original “scream queen” role in the reboots. He is a natural choice to direct The Exorcist which promises to give many a nightmare or two along the way when it is released in 2023. Anyone who has seen the 1973 classic knows that exorcism movies rarely come close to the original picture but in Gordon Green’s hands, the film (to be produced by Blumhouse) stands the chance of being almost as good as the first movie especially with the always sensational Burstyn (and Dowd) attached to the project.

The Exorcist is slated for a release in  October 2023, just in time for Halloween. This picture will serve as a sequel to the classic movie which many remember as the first horror movie that truly scared the hell out of them. It is going to be interesting to see how Dowd does in the movie given all her great screen performances thus far. Gordon Green has also been announced to be doing a Hellraiser movie spin-off as a TV series but that’s for another article.
