The “unsinkable” Kathy Bates will be returning to the screen in an upcoming film called The Smack which will also star another Oscar winner, Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea). Affleck will be featured in The Smack as a con artist who is out to score big-time with another con. Centered in L.A., the movie promises to be entertaining and will certainly have a few tricks up its sleeve. Bates’ role in the new movie has not been disclosed at the present time. This film will be directed by David M. Rosenthal. Unified pictures will be co-producing the picture.

Bates needs no introduction. Her first big role in the Stephen King story adapted horror film, Misery, back in 1990, landed her an Oscar win for Best Actress. She went on to co-star as Denver’s socialite, “The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” in the box-office smash/Academy Award winning film, Titanic. She recently was rewarded with another Oscar nomination for her fine supporting work in Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell.

The Smack is going to be a dramatic action picture that has a sharp edge which includes the plot device that Affleck’s con artist character in the film must compete with his ex-wife (Tomei) for the big score in the movie. Con artists are always reliable characters to get the plot of a thriller rolling with excellent potential and this upcoming movie seems like it has all the ingredients of a winning picture.

Bates has always proved to be a team player, even going so far as to taking smaller parts back in the mid 1990’s in movies such as a terrific little film called Angus. She also was noteworthy for her work playing in yet another Stephen King film adaptation called Dolores Claiborne in which Bates hit the ball out of the park with her great performance. Let’s not forget her spectacular turn as Libby Holden in Primary Colors.

In The Smack, there will certainly be no shortage of Oscar-winning talent. These performers featured in the upcoming movie have always been masters of the acting game and Kathy Bates, in particular, has consistently remained a forced to contend with in the world of dramatic film acting. One can imagine that if all this great talent signed on to the project that it will be a movie to look forward to with great anticipation.
