The Watchers Sets Father’s Day Weekend Release Date

Upcoming New Line thriller release from Ishana Night Shyamalan, The Watchers, has swapped its release date from June 7th to June 14th due, in part, to fierce competition.

A highly anticipated scary suspense picture starring Dakota Fanning called The Watchers is going to be getting a jump start on this summer’s movie season with its planned June 14th release date. The picture was originally scheduled to open June 7th against the likes of the new Bad Boys picture and a reboot of The Crow. Though the Bad Boys movie will have a strong second weekend, there should be room for a different type of movie in the crowd and that’s exactly the type of picture that The Watchers will be– different.

Also opening directly against The Watchers, which will be a unique type of horror movie, is Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2. Though they are two opposite kinds of movies, Inside Out 2 is most likely going to be the number one attraction at the box-office. There is a built in audience for Inside Out 2 even though Disney movies haven’t been performing as well financially as they used to (possibly because of Disney Plus). The Watchers will be counter-programming for the most likely to be sold out Bad Boys 4 and the kid-friendly Inside Out 2. Expect The Watchers to come in third place opening weekend, right ahead of a new The Crow reboot.

A.M. Shine penned the novel from 2021 on which The Watchers is based. This film is being directed by M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan which means you could expect some twisty plot revelations along the way, if Ishana is anything like her dad as a filmmaker. Dakota Fanning will serve as an artist named Mina who gets stuck in a forest in western Ireland. She, alongside three other characters, ends up confronting strange creatures who come out at night. Also starring in the movie is Georgina Campbell who wowed audiences in the last year’s sleeper horror movie hit, Barbarian.

New Line was the studio behind the recently successful Evil Dead Rise, a reboot of old Evil Dead movies. New Line knows how to market horror movies and insiders are confident that The Watchers will get a sizable marketing campaign and one which will draw movie-goers to theaters. Dakota Fanning and Georgina Campbell seem like a great pairing and all eyes will be on Ishana’s work as a filmmaker, with people hoping she can successfully follow in her old man’s footsteps. The Watchers will hopefully be a success in line with some for the best films Ishana’s dad has made such as The Sixth Sense, Signs and The Village.
