Ron Howard’s Thirteen Lives Finds Itself a Summer Amazon Tentpole

Acclaimed Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard‘s latest film has moved up from a November release to an August one.

Ron Howard is no stranger to making inspirational movies. From Apollo 13 to A Beautiful Mind, which were made at the height of his career, Howard proved himself a master of the thought-provoking, against-all-odds triumphant pictures that could inspire audiences to stand up and cheer. Now, the heavy, but inspiring, drama Thirteen Lives will mark a return to form for the powerhouse filmmaker. This upcoming film will be released in August instead of its originally planned November launch date. It is set to be unveiled on Amazon Prime Video after a brief theatrical release which will officially help qualify it for next year’s Oscar nominations.

Thirteen Lives features a cast of actors who are definitely not lightweights in Hollywood by any measure. Viggo Mortensen will be prominently featured in the movie alongside fine performers Colin Farrell (coming off his fascinating turn as the Penguin in The Batman) and Joel Edgerton. Not too shabby a cast at all. This film is based on a true story which happened in 2018. A Thai soccer team of 12 players and its coach became trapped in a series of waterlogged caves without sufficient oxygen during the course of the events of the fact based film. Nobody makes tales of hope and inspiration like Howard does and this one promises to be the most exciting film of Howard’s recent directorial career.

The former MGM project came on to Amazon’s slate in an $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM by Amazon back in March. Thirteen Lives is the typical project to appeal to an international audience as well as a domestic one and is a tried and true story of the fight for survival which will certainly have audiences at the edge of their seats (if they watch it at home) or cheering in the aisles (if they see it in a theater).

Meanwhile, Howard’s daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard, has a little “art house” movie coming out this June called Jurassic World Dominion which is set to be released on June 10th. This summer is definitely looking like it could shape up as the season of the Howards, both artistically and financially.

Mortensen will be making his bid for an Oscar nod with his work in Thirteen Lives and could stand a chance at Academy Award glory if his performance here lives up to his previous work. Mortensen is no slouch, however, and also has another upcoming high-profile release–David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future. This could finally be the year Mortensen wins that Oscar!

Thirteen Lives is set for an August release, as previously stated, and will most likely re-establish Howard as one of the most formidable directors working in Hollywood today.
