Warner Bros. Changes Release Dates of Key Blockbusters

Warner Bros. has moved several projects around their theatrical release schedule and this means the unveiling dates of some huge movies such as the new Aquaman film have changed.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson originally had a couple of big movies opening in theaters this summer (Black Adam and the animated DC League of Super-Pets, respectively). It’s been narrowed down to just one (DC League of Super-Pets) as the other picture has shifted its release date to October 21st of this year. As a fan of Johnson and comic actress Vanessa Bayer who also stars in the animated picture, DC League of Super-Pets has gone to the top of my must-see list for this coming summer and other DC fans are in great anticipation of seeing it as well. It was originally scheduled for May 20, 2022 but will now come out July 29th instead.

Audiences also won’t be seeing Jason Momoa in his latest Aquaman picture in 2022. Instead, they’ll have to wait until the lucky day of St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th) in 2023 to see their DC superhero in action. It seems Warner Bros. had to make this move due to the fact that COVID-19 is still not over and/or the Visual Effects these films feature will most likely take more time to perfect on account of logjams that post production facilities have been facing.

Another movie which was delayed was the Timothee Chalamet film, Wonka. That movie was originally slated for the March 17, 2023 date which Aquaman just snagged. Wonka will now open in the competitive 2023 Christmas movie-going season and has a release date of December 15, 2023. The highly anticipated superhero movie, The Flash is another picture which got affected by these changes. It was slated for November 4th, 2022 originally but now has a potentially more lucrative release date of June 23, 2023.

Warner Bros. recently took a hit with some box-office disappointments such as The Matrix: Resurrections which premiered on HBO Max the same day it hit theaters and fizzled in theaters as a result. The studio is most likely working to position all of its tentpole films properly in order to maximize profits to make up for some of the low numbers seen at the box-office in 2021.

A release date for Shazam! Fury of the Gods has been shifted as well. That film was not delayed but rather moved forward. It went from June 2, 2023 to December 16, 2022 replacing Aquaman‘s original date. Shazam! Fury of the Gods could be the least lucrative of the aforementioned bunch of pictures but it all depends on how good the film is to make that call. It’s thus too soon to make guesses about the reasoning behind the shift in release date for that picture. Rachel Zegler of West Side Story fame will be appearing in the Shazam! movie.

Also on the upcoming release schedule is Meg 2: The Trench which is the latest Jason Statham shark picture. That movie has secured an unveiling date of August 4, 2023 right in the heart of the summer. Hopefully, these release dates will lead to bigger profits for Warner Bros.
