A COMPLETE UNKNOWN Does Well at SAG with 4 Nominations, Including One for Co-Star Edward Norton
SAG Announces Nominations
A Complete Unknown, alongside Wicked, led the Screen Actors Guild film nominations with plenty of accolades from SAG for some of the year’s very best movies.
Don’t expect Angelina Jolie (Maria) or Guy Pearce (The Brutalist) to take home a Screen Actors Guild award. They weren’t nominated in their respective categories of Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor. Pearce was snubbed alongside co-star Felicity Jones for the cast ensemble of The Brutalist which failed to yield a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Adrien Brody did earn a Best Actor nomination for his outstanding work in The Brutalist. The big surprise was the stellar showing of A Complete Unknown and Wicked: Part 1. Both of these films got members of their cast nominations in several categories, including the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category.
The Best Actor category went down exactly as predicted: Brody, Timothée Chalamet for A Complete Unknown, Ralph Fiennes for Conclave, Daniel Craig for Queer and Colman Domingo for Sing Sing. SAG’s Best Actress nominations snubbed Jolie and Tilda Swinton (The Room Next Door) which leaves the door wide open for a Demi Moore victory at the Academy Awards for her work in The Substance. The lead actress nominees for SAG were: Moore, Cynthia Erivo (Wicked: Part 1), Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl), Mikey Madison (Anora) and Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez). Also snubbed was Golden Globe winner Fernanda Torres for her work in I’m Still Here.
Edward Norton took a Best Supporting Actor nod for his turn as Pete Seeger in A Complete Unknown and he was joined by probable winner Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice), Jonathan Bailey (Wicked: Part 1) and Yura Borisov for Anora. There was no mention of Guy Pearce or Denzel Washington who was expected to be nominated for Gladiator II. Jamie Lee Curtis was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for The Last Showgirl and she was joined by Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson), Ariana Grande (Wicked: Part 1), Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown) and potential victor, Zoë Saldaña for Emilia Pérez. So much for Margaret Qualley getting a nod as many thought she would for The Substance or Felicity Jones getting a mention for The Brutalist.
“Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture” nominees included two musicals: Wicked: Part 1 and Emilia Pérez and a movie full of music- A Complete Unknown. Anora and Conclave were the other two films in that category which received nominations for Best cast. “Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble” nominees included Wicked: Part 1. Other nominated films in that category were The Fall Guy, Gladiator II, Dune: Part Two and Deadpool & Wolverine.
