A GUY WALKS INTO A BAR: Oscar Winner Sam Rockwell Cast in Upcoming Dark Comedy

Sam Rockwell Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri

Sam Rockwell to Star in New Gary Fleder Film

The versatile Sam Rockwell has been cast in a principal role in the upcoming dark comedy titled, A Guy Walks Into a Bar.

Sam Rockwell has taken a role opposite occasional funnyman Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick) in the forthcoming movie, A Guy Walks Into a Bar. Directed by long-time filmmaker Gary Fleder (Kiss the Girls), expect the upcoming picture to have a lot of appeal to independent and mainstream movie audiences who loved Rockwell and Nanjiani when they put out individual comedy movies such as Laggies and Stuber in the 2010’s.

A Guy Walks Into a Bar will focus on Rockwell’s mysterious character in the picture. Nanjiani will play a father who encounters Rockwell’s character in a bar and finds that something just seems a bit strange about him. For one, he may be hiding a secret. Rockwell will, once again, play a charismatic type of role this time out although it is uncertain what tricks Fleder’s film will have up its sleeve. Fleder’s movies are typically known for their surprising plot developments and interesting endings.

Rockwell really burst onto the scene as a character actor to be reckoned with in The Green Mile in 1999 and, for the past 24 years, he’s taken on many different and unusual, but successful, parts. In 2000’s Charlie’s Angels, he played opposite some fine cast members (Bill Murray, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, etc.) and stood out significantly with his quirky turn in the picture. In 2014’s Laggies, Rockwell played the love interest for Keira Knightley and created some fun, endearing chemistry with her.

In 2017’s terrific, Oscar-nominated masterpiece, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Rockwell took home the Academy Award for his offbeat supporting role in the star-studded movie which also showcased Frances McDormand in a performance that took home the gold. Most recently (just last year), Rockwell played with the great Saoirse Ronan in the critical success (but box-office disappointment), See How They Run. Despite good reviews, the film just made a mere $9 million domestically on a large screen count.

Could Rockwell and Nanjiani be the type of dream team that could make A Guy Walks Into a Bar a box-office hit? Rockwell is known for his juicy past roles and will probably be excellent in the part of a man with a strange past if Rockwell’s past performances are an indicator of future success for the actor.

Nanjiani also struggled at the box-office with the funny Stuber in 2019 though he garnered a lot of fans for the movie during the pandemic when the movie was available on streaming. Stuber only made $22 million domestically but garnered a decent “B” CinemaScore grade. People seemed to like the movie much more than its “B” indicated, though, as the film was very well-received by comedy fans in 2020.

Sam Rockwell is a genius in the craft of playing “Mr. Cool.” He did the voice of Mr. Wolf in the hit, The Bad Guys, and audiences are expecting big things for the actor with his performance in A Guy Walks Into a Bar.
