A Sequel to ROMY AND MICHELE’S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION Could Be in the Works

A Romy and Michele Sequel May be on the Horizon

Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow have announced the possibility of a sequel to their 1997 comedy, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.

In 1997, high school reunion comedies were moderately successful. Both Grosse Pointe Blank and Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion were both released that year. They each made enough money to qualify as small hits but were appreciated more later on as the years passed. Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion earned $29 million at the domestic box-office but had a super soundtrack and fun performances from its stars, Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow. These two actresses played two women in their late 20’s who have little to show for their current lives and they were heading to their high school reunion. Now, news of a potential sequel to the Sorvino/Kudrow movie has come into view and fans couldn’t be more excited.

Screenwriter Robin Schiff doesn’t have a finalized idea yet but Sorvino suggested we’re getting closer to the fruition of an actual follow up movie. If you remember the first movie, you’ll remember that Romy and Michele lied in the picture by pretending they invented post-its. It was a hysterical scenario that was truly amusing and Schiff could have more zany situations at her disposal to make for a great sequel. Those two lead characters were almost like the female equivalent of Wayne and Garth from the Wayne’s World movies.

The always intriguing Janeane Garofalo, in the prime of her career (fresh off The Truth About Cats & Dogs), also had a fun part in the comical picture but it was the dance sequence at the end of the original movie that had people so divided on the film. In the movie, Sorvino and Kudrow’s Romy and Michele characters danced with a successful former nerd named Sandy (played by Alan Cumming) to Cyndi Lauper’s popular song, “Time After Time.” That scene was unusual in its quirky choreography and led to an overall “C” CinemaScore grade. But, as the years passed, that sequence has found quite a few fans who actually grew to appreciate how offbeat it was. The film left us at the conclusion with Romy and Michele running their own clothing business.

In a Sirius XM interview, Kudrow, herself, confirmed that something is going on regarding the possibility of a script. Sorvino and Kudrow had met up again not too long ago at this year’s SAG awards which has helped keep the classic characters of Romy and Michele fresh in people’s memories. While it remains to be seen as to whether or not the film actually gets made, fans of the 1997 movie are surely hoping it does make it to completion.
