Ana de Armas Receives Golden Globe Nomination for Best Actress for the Controversial Film BLONDE

Ana De Armas Close Up Blonde

Ana de Armas is Recognized for Her Difficult Role in Blonde

Ana de Armas received a deserved Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Drama for her work in the provocative film, Blonde.

The Golden Globes have given a glimmer of hope to a performance which was once considered Oscar bait. However, the movie, Blonde‘s difficult subject matter proved to be a barrier to any serious preliminary awards that would suggest the role would garner Oscar attention. Now the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has nominated Ana de Armas for her lead dramatic role in Andrew Dominik’s powerful film, Blonde. With that news, there is some potential that de Armas could find herself in the running for a Best Actress Academy Award.

Ana de Armas found the recognition to be “an incredible surprise” and it wasn’t just a shock to her. Some folks took to Twitter to express their concerns over de Armas’ Globe nod. This nomination was a controversial one because many had expected Till star, Danielle Deadwyler, to be nominated instead of de Armas. Deadwyler’s film certainly has a higher Rotten Tomatoes score with a 98% approval rating compared to Blonde‘s 42% approval. In examination of de Armas’ fine work in Blonde, though, I believe she deserved the nomination but so did Deadwyler making it one of the strangest turn of events to come from the announcement of the Globe nods.

The other nominees for Best Actress in a drama were Cate Blanchett (Tár), Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans), Viola Davis (The Woman King) and Olivia Colman (Empire of Light). While there is one name there on that list which I would have eliminated for Deadwyler’s inclusion, I won’t say who it is. This is out of respect for the performer who is certainly a great talent. The Globes definitely didn’t make a mistake in including de Armas who carried the weight of a three-hour movie on her shoulders. There were a lot of provocative sexual scenes and varied emotions that de Armas fiercely and fearlessly took on to emerge victorious in a film that many people did not like. The potency of de Armas’ work, though, simply could not realistically be ignored.

The actress who is working on Ballerina, a John Wick spinoff, thanked Blonde director Dominik after she got nominated. Unfortunately, Marilyn Monroe (the icon played by de Armas in Blonde)’s mother character in the film, who was played by the great Julianne Nicholson, hasn’t popped up anywhere exciting in terms of nominations, yet. It is a fact considering the complexity of the role de Armas played in the movie that her nod should be celebrated. Let’s hope it’s a path to the Oscars for de Armas.
