The charismatic Canadian actor Niall Matter has made quite a splash in the United States.

Before that, however, Niall’s life was something less than glamorous. Though he showed talent at the age of 13 in his native Alberta by winning a best actor prize in a provincial competition, his real-life ‘bad boy’ reputation was short-lived, beginning and ending at the age of 17. He had gotten into some trouble — evidently nothing major, but enough to land him working on an oil rig under the supervision of his grandfather. Niall labored on rigs for eight years, along with his father and brother. He credits this period in his life as instrumental in focusing his talents, both at school and on the job. At the age of 25, a serious accident and arduous recovery led Matter to pursue acting seriously.

Matter managed to temper his previous experience as troubled teen and ‘roughneck,’ combining cavalier confidence and good looks with irresistible charm and smooth talk to forge together, arguably, the best example of a ‘bad boy’ persona as the troublesome genius among geniuses, Zane Donovan, in the series Eureka. Soon after his stint on that show, he widened his dramatis personae to include the complex romantic as Greg, the love interest in Season 4 of 90210. He also portrayed the mythical character Rip van Winkle in the fish-out-of-water comedy/drama, Rip in Time.

While the mainstay of Matter’s work thus far has been on television, he has appeared in features as well, expanding his experience into other genres. These include the 2018 Shane Black film, The Predator, Falling for Christmas, and a featured role in the acclaimed black comedy, Ally Was Screaming. Most recently, he portrayed Nick Miller, a regular character in the Aurora Teagarden Mysteries, a number of films made for television based on the novels of the same name by Charlaine Harris.

Notably, Martin Wood directed a number of the Aurora Teagarden films, and according to one source at least, is directing Double Life. He has also directed a number of widely popular television series episodes: Virgin River, Travelers, Sanctuary, and Stargate SG-1. Joining Martin Wood behind the scenes is the British writer/director Michael Hurst, former kickboxing champion and black-belt, whose own myriad of credits include Paradox, Femme Fatales, Ninja, and New Blood.

Niall joins the cast including Javicia Leslie (Batwoman), as the widow, Vincent Gale (Van Helsing), John Cassini (Se7en, Get Carter), Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica, Unspeakable), Carmen Moore (Blackstone), Alex Stines (Moonfall), William MacDonald (Riverdale), Kaaren de Zilva (Juno, Siren), and actor/stuntman Jojo Ahenkorah.

Evidently Double Life is a cop thriller in which a widow discovers her husband’s death was not accidental, and joins forces with another woman (Paramour? Detective? Both?) to discover the truth. Fortunately, we shouldn’t have to wait very long to see for ourselves how the filmmaking team spins this latest foray into the (revenge?) thriller genre. The planned release is sometime in 2022, though no definite date has been given.
