Ari Aster Set to Produce a Nicolas Cage Comedy

Horror film director Ari Aster is slated to be producing a new A24 Nicolas Cage comedy called Dream Scenario.

You’ve seen Ari Aster’s dark horror films, Hereditary and Midsommar, but something tells me he has a brighter side which he may be endorsing with the new film he is producing, Dream Scenario. Nicolas Cage will be returning to comedy for the new picture shortly after he played himself in the well-received The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

Aster needs no introduction as people who know his work are huge fans of it, for the most part anyway. I’ve never met a horror movie buff who doesn’t love his two acclaimed horror pictures. Of course, CinemaScore grades tell a bit of a different story with 2018’s Hereditary earning a “D+” and 2019’s Midsommar obtaining just a “C+” but horror movies tend to be underscored by opening night audiences which is evidenced by the recent “C” grade received by the brand-new #1 at the box-office picture, The Invitation. Of course, The Invitation scored much less well with critics than Hereditary so what do audiences know about good horror movies anyway?

Dream Scenario is going to be financed by A24, a studio which mostly releases indie gems, and the picture will be directed by Kristoffer Borgli. Meanwhile, producer Aster was more recently behind the camera directing the upcoming 2023 release called Disappointment Blvd. which will most likely showcase actor Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) in top form again under Aster’s wing.

Strong leading performances are certainly something Aster seems capable of obtaining from the performers he works with. Toni Collette scored raves for her electrifying turn in Hereditary and Florence Pugh knocked the socks off viewers in her terrific role in the amazing Midsommar. Pugh is soon going to be seen in the eagerly awaited Olivia Wilde movie, Don’t Worry Darling which is opening early this fall. She’s also been working on Dune: Part Two and the greatly anticipated Christopher Nolan directed movie studio tentpole, Oppenheimer as well. Looks like Aster helped bring a great actress into the limelight.

There are so many fans of Aster that a “Director’s Cut” of Midsommar was released and did tremendously well in terms of home entertainment sales following its theatrical run. Will people who are his fans turn up for a comedy he is producing? With Nicolas Cage at the center of it, things are looking pretty much on the upside for sure. If you haven’t discovered the many talents of Aster, why not start with watching his acclaimed horror movies? You may have nightmares for days, but his artistry is unparalleled.
