Thoughts on This Week’s In-home Releases

The home releases of Empire of Light, The Inspection, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Women Talking, Station Eleven, Thelma & Louise, and Serpico are the most noteworthy releases (and pre-orders) on home video and streaming services this week.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed Empire of Light and had this to say about the film:

Despite its limitations, Empire of Light is a decent movie. Colman is passionate and vulnerable in her role although it’s not a performance on the level of some of her previous ones. That being said, Ward makes this movie a better film than it could have been if his role was cast with a lesser actor in it.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed The Inspection and had this to say about the film:

The Inspection makes an impact on the viewer that will likely linger for a long time after the closing credits roll. In wanting more from the picture, perhaps, that’s a true testament to the film’s strengths more than its weaknesses.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and had this to say about the film:

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is entertaining and may be a last hurrah for these spin-off movies that focus solely on Puss and his friends. Banderas has always made this character enormously energetic and once again succeeds in bringing Puss to life. He’s a hero that will be cherished even if the movie goes through some of its paces in a predictable fashion.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed Women Talking and had this to say about the film:

As the picture reaches its powerful conclusion, Women Talking sugarcoats nothing. It’s a fiercely acted movie about taking a stand and doing what is necessary to live the best life possible. It takes big risks and succeeds in ways no other picture this year has in terms of being totally creative and making important points about the necessity for a positive quality of life for all. Polley’s movie will get under your skin and stay there for days. It’s a true triumph.
