EXPEND4BLES Leads the Way at Razzie Awards But MAGIC MIKE’S LAST DANCE Gets Unexpected Dishonors Too

Razzie Awards Announced with Unfair Inclusions

The Razzie Awards contenders were announced as they always are the day before the Oscar nominations but there were a couple of unfair choices this year.

There were many mediocre to poor films last year and a lot of them found their way into the race for the Razzie Awards for Worst Picture, Worst Actor, Worst Actress, etc. Leading the way with 7 Razzie nods was the disappointing action picture, Expend4bles. In the year of film that was last year, it’s understandable why Expend4bles was chosen as the bottom contender given its tepid box-office results and underachieving story line. Alongside such disasters as The Exorcist: Believer and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, a good film or, rather, two or three got unfairly mentioned today as well.

After Jennifer Lopez won acclaim for Hustlers back in 2019, you wouldn’t think you’d see her in contention to “win” a Razzie for Worst Actress. She entered the race, though, with her good turn in The Mother which was on Netflix last year and did rather well. Joining Lopez in Worst Actress was an even better performance: Salma Hayek for the wildly enjoyable Magic Mike’s Last Dance. Besides The Mother and Magic Mike’s Last Dance, all the other pictures were more or less objectively deserving of their dishonorable mentions today. Shazam! Fury of the Gods was entertaining enough but got disrespect from the Razzies which was easy to understand given its poor reaction by audiences and at the box-office.

The disaster called Ghosted which starred Ana de Armas and Chris Evans received nominations for both of its stars for Worst Actress and Worst Actor, disrespectfully. Meg 2: The Trench, a goofy action picture starring Jason Statham, got nods from the Razzies in different categories such as Worst Picture and Worst Actor. Also in the running, this time in the category of Worst Supporting Actress, was Mary Stuart Masterson for Five Nights at Freddy’s. It was nice to see Masterson working again in that movie but she didn’t live up to expectations at all, judging from her Razzie nod.

Ant Man and The Wasp: Quantumania pretty much helped lead to the demise of Marvel movies (for now) and, not surprisingly, found itself in the running for 4 Razzies. The merely adequate Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and the horror fan favorite The Pope’s Exorcist got dishonorably mentioned in a couple of categories each too. There were far worse movies than those two this year but the Razzies made their decision to include aspects of these films in their selected nominations.

Vin Diesel got a nod of disapproval for Worst Actor for Fast X which may help serve to sway him away from the franchise after the last film in that series comes out in 2025. In defense of Magic Mike’s Last Dance, I found the chemistry between Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek to be steamy and enjoyable to watch. The Razzies clearly disagreed.
