The Possibility of a Gremlins 3 Exists

Zach Galligan, the star of the Gremlins films, has suggested that there could be a third film in the very popular film series that had entries in the mid-1980’s and early 1990’s.

Zach Galligan, who played Billy in the Gremlins films, has hinted that there may well be a third Gremlins movie. It was a film series (that had two entries) which satisfied both young and old way back when. There has also been a recent animated series, “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai.” But, there hasn’t been a cinematic entry in the Gremlins franchise in 34 years.

Galligan thinks that Warner Bros. Discovery positioned the two seasons of “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” as something leading to a potentially bigger project. Perhaps, this series exists in order to pave the way for another live-action movie.

However, Chris Columbus, the creator of Gremlins, doesn’t think a jump from “tangible puppets” to CGI would be the right thing to do with the next installment of Gremlins. It was revealed that there is, indeed, a script for Gremlins 3 which means the project could come into fruition in the not-too-distant future. According to Galligan, this third picture in the franchise will not be a reboot but rather a true blue sequel if it does happen. That’s because Columbus is not interested in a reboot.

“Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” takes viewers back in time to Shanghai in the 1920’s. Gizmo, the puppet star of Gremlins, and shop owner Sam Wing are the central characters in the show. This show serves as a prelude to the first Gremlins movie which came out in 1984.

The hook for the Gremlins movies was that there were three rules regarding the Mogwais. One was not to get them wet because if one does, the Mogwais will multiply. Bright lights were also a no-no but the most important rule was never, ever feed them after midnight. When the Mogwais get fed after midnight, they turn into rowdy demonic-type creatures who look scary and are known as –you guessed it– Gremlins.

Why hasn’t a third Gremlins film already happened? The original Gremlins made a whopping $153 million at the domestic box-office back in 1984. It took six years, though, for its sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch to come out. Despite a “B+” CinemaScore, though, the second Gremlins film crashed and burned at the box-office. It only made $41 million and thus put a nail in the coffin for the franchise back then. Now, though, with old 1980’s movies such as Ghostbusters getting new sequels these days, a new Gremlins film may have a shot at big-time box-office success.
