HOCUS POCUS 3: Bette Midler Suggests That a Third Sanderson Sisters Film Entry is Still Being Discussed

Hocus Pocus 3 is Still in its Developmental Stages
Bette Midler recently stated that there are still talks about plans to bring the Sanderson sisters back in a third installment of Hocus Pocus.
Bette Midler, the Divine Ms. M, has hinted that there is still potential to see the Sanderson sisters back together again in another Hocus Pocus movie. In fact, Midler thinks the role she plays — the witch, Winifred — is something along the lines of Shakespearean and, since she’s not going to be performing in a Shakespeare production anytime soon, she has been enjoying a great run in this unique franchise.
Remember the first theatrical release of Hocus Pocus was not the biggest financial success of Midler’s prosperous career but that original 1993 movie has built quite a following over the 30-plus years that have passed since its initial release. The Sanderson sisters has become a Halloween costume for groups of three, especially since the premiere of Hocus Pocus 2 a couple of years ago on Disney+.
Joining Midler in the previous 2 Hocus Pocus films were Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. Hopefully, Midler’s funny co-stars will also come on board a third entry in the franchise. No talk of the specifics regarding the potential story line have been unleashed quite yet. But, who needs a plot, anyway? The second movie was a streaming sensation despite the fact that it showcased a pretty slim story line. The fun in these pictures is seeing the three actresses get together and act goofy.
In addition, Bette Midler has a movie coming out in July called The Fabulous Four where she appears with three fine actresses: Megan Mullally, Susan Sarandon and Sheryl Lee Ralph. While it may not be a summer blockbuster, and is probably a bit more serious than the Sanderson sisters movies, it could make a splash on the independent movie scene and whet audiences’ appetites for the next Hocus Pocus movie.
Midler’s work as Winifred Sanderson may be similar to Shakespeare in terms of certain particulars but the character Midler portrays is much more humorous than much of the famous playwright’s well-known characters. Macbeth, the famous play showcasing witches, from the Bard, never had them rolling in the aisles quite like Midler did with her great characterization.
Who would have guessed in 1993 when Hocus Pocus lost out at the box-office to Free Willy that we’d be looking forward to more Sanderson sisters antics all the way in 2024? Certainly not the always divine Midler who was surprised that these witch movies she stars in are as immensely popular as they are! A third film in the series would undoubtedly drive viewership on Disney+ again but the producers should seriously consider a theatrical release with the days of the pandemic behind us. It would most likely be a “graveyard smash.”
