HORIZON: AN AMERICAN SAGA – CHAPTER 2 (2024): Warner Bros. Pulls Second HORIZON Film from its Positioned August Release Date

Second Horizon Film Loses its August Release Date

Due to middling box-office numbers for Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, the second installment of the series has been pulled from its position for a late summer theatrical release.

Kevin Costner’s disappointing box-office results for his new epic Western have resulted in the second picture in the series getting cut from the August release schedule. The people who have purchased advance tickets to the picture will get their money back because the release of the second installment in the series has been delayed indefinitely. The second film in the series was originally intended to be released on August 16, 2024.

While the people interested in Chapter 2 are going to be left in limbo for the time being, those who haven’t seen Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 will be able to pay for it at home on demand starting July 16th. Even if the movie picks up traction, it feels that the second installment will probably not be released theatrically given the large costs associated with such an unveiling.

The news actually gets worse. Warner Bros./New Line didn’t obtain distribution rights to the third and fourth pictures in the series. Though the third one has started production, the fourth movie could end up getting squashed altogether unless Costner has a Plan B that he plans to abide by to release the remaining movies in his film series. Costner has already invested millions and millions of his own dollars in these projects which doesn’t help an already complicated situation.

The only hope for the Horizon films is that they pick up steam through streaming. I predicted that the later movies in the series would feel more at home on a service like Max although nobody saw the fact that the second movie would be pulled from its already scheduled theatrical release as a real possibility until now.

The biggest red flag in this whole situation was the “B-” CinemaScore grade that Chapter 1 received on its opening night. It is representative of the problem with the film which received a 6/10 from us here at FilmBook. There was no real closure to the movie that would make it feel complete as a standalone picture. Enjoyment of Chapter 1 was completely dependent on seeing at least part of Chapter 2 to know what was ahead for the series’ characters.

While the fate of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 remains to be seen, it could be a better film than Chapter 1 and open up the possibility to seeing at least two more chapters in the series. Just probably not on the big screen as Costner may have hoped for. As of now, without seeing future chapters, it is impossible to decipher what Costner’s vision was for the series as a whole.
