Idina Menzel is Waiting to Voice Elsa Again (Patiently)

Idina Menzel is certainly on board with voicing Elsa for a Frozen III project but she’s still waiting for the call that it’s going to officially happen.

Love them or hate them, the Frozen films are one of the biggest Disney franchises of all-time. So, if you don’t love these films, you’ll have to just “let it go.” Meanwhile, Idina Menzel is patiently waiting for the official phone call that Frozen III will be a “go.” Menzel told People magazine that she hopes the sequel is in the works.

Financially speaking, there’s no reason that Frozen III shouldn’t happen. The 2013 original film earned a splendid $400 million domestically and another $880 million internationally. Then, the 2019 sequel, Frozen II,  did even better business. That sequel secured $477 domestically and an additional $972 million internationally.

Artistically speaking, Frozen fans were not as impressed with the sequel as they were with the original. 2013’s Frozen received a coveted “A+” CinemaScore grade while the follow-up movie got just an “A-” CinemaScore mark. Considering the box-office improvement, however, I doubt Disney is losing any sleep about those CinemaScores.

Let’s consider the pandemic getting in the way as a possible reason that there has been little going on to rush the next Frozen movie into production. Although there were six years in between the two Frozen movies previously, fans are still eagerly waiting for another dose of Elsa, Anna, and Olaf plus co.

Idina Menzel “let it go” to great effect in the original movie when she sang that titled acclaimed song to perfection so it’s no surprise the hugely regarded actress/voice over artist is waiting for the call to step back into the role of Elsa. In the meantime, she’s been playing other roles in live-action princess movies. Menzel recently appeared in Cinderella and is slated to be appearing in the Enchanted sequel, Disenchanted later this year where Menzel will be portraying Nancy Tremaine and starring opposite Amy Adams.

It could be anybody’s guess as to how long, exactly, it will take for another Frozen movie to move forward. With a Broadway musical that was released based on the material a few years back, it’s certain that Elsa and Anna (plus Olaf and co.) are still hugely bankable characters.

If we add an extra year for our lost pandemic year, it could eventually be seven years in between the second and third Frozen films. However, the folks at Disney may expedite the process if they know how in demand another Frozen picture really is. But, don’t hold your breath too long just in case Disney decides to drag its feet. It took 15 years for another Enchanted movie to finally make it out to the public. Then again, Enchanted didn’t make the kind of money the Frozen pictures made. Idina Menzel, when you get that call, let us all know!
