JURASSIC WORLD 4 (2025): Gareth Edwards In Negotiations to Helm Next Year’s Dinosaur Extravaganza

The Creator Director in Talks to Take On Next Jurassic Movie

Gareth Edwards, could be helming the next Jurassic World film after the previous deal with filmmaker David Leitch fell through the cracks.

2022’s Brad Pitt hit, Bullet Train‘s ambitious director, David Leitch, was recently attached to possibly direct the fourth installment of Jurassic World but, since the deal with Leitch and Universal fell through, a replacement was quickly sought after. Now, it looks like the director could well be Gareth Edwards who stunned the movie world last year with the visual effects-driven, science fiction picture, The Creator.

Gareth Edwards has, in fact, done a creature feature in the past so is probably a great candidate for the job of directing the new installment of Jurassic World. If you remember correctly, Edwards made the box-office (and critical) hit from 2014, Godzilla. Edwards is also known for the creative Star Wars picture, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story from 2016. He’s got a history of hits to accompany his more ambitious side which was so prevalent in The Creator.

With Jurassic World 4 due out in theaters July 4th weekend in 2025, it may be convenient to simply close the deal with Edwards and get cameras rolling on the sequel as soon as possible. This upcoming Jurassic World movie is possibly going to be more of an art house Jurassic World film and will, surprisingly, scrap stars like Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and Jeff Goldblum in favor of a new take on the material. If anyone can do artsy movies, it’s Edwards who is known for his acclaimed ambitious indie, Monsters, from back in 2010. But, don’t get too worried. Edwards will also most likely be able to satisfy mainstream tastes as well.

In The Creator, Edwards showed how he could make a movie visually appealing and, at the same time, the director also captured a human side to a story about Artificial Intelligence, of all things. Perhaps, Edwards can breathe new life into the Jurassic franchise which is taking that new spin on the dinosaurs which were seen in the previous films. Axing the old stars might be a good idea as they didn’t help Jurassic World: Dominion from a critical standpoint. The film received some scathing reviews along the way when it was released.

David Leitch may have been too stylistic a director to be able to abide by the demands of the Jurassic series. Edwards can direct ambitious movies and blockbusters to equal degree of success and has the know-how to offer a fresher look at the world so prominently featured in the previous dinosaur films.

While Jurassic World: Dominion didn’t exactly bomb out at the box-office, imagine the box-office results that film could have obtained if it was actually a better movie. It made $376 million domestically and combined with international ticket sales,  topped the $1 billion mark. Edwards could steer the new follow up film towards that mark and beyond, if his previous work is any hope of what he can bring to a franchise which seemed to be becoming a bit stale. As wildly intriguing as The Creator was, it never felt manipulative and always had an edge to the material which made it interesting to behold. All eyes will be on this new Jurassic World movie to see if Edwards can revitalize the popular dinosaur film series (which apparently has a built-in audience) critically as well as financially.
