The Black Phone 2 Could Happen

Scott Derrickson has revealed the condition that would have to happen if there was to be a sequel to his 2022 box-office hit, The Black Phone.

When Ethan Hawke played a genuinely creepy child kidnapper called The Grabber in The Black Phone, it resulted in some of the actor’s best recent box-office grosses. Now, it has been known that if Hawke were to come back on board for a follow-up film, director Scott Derrickson could be down to make it.

The Black Phone was always destined to be a big hit. Ever since its frightening trailer debuted, horror fans were hooked by the premise of Hawke playing a creep among creeps. The 2022 original film earned a solid “B+” CinemaScore which was a great grade for a horror picture. The film ended up with a terrific $90 million domestically and another healthy $71 million from international audiences. Those kinds of numbers suggest people would turn out for a sequel.

The second edition of The Black Phone may have to be a prequel if it were to feature Hawke because the first movie seemed to have sealed the Grabber’s fate in the last act. That is if the filmmakers decide to go the prequel route to see what the Grabber was up to before the events that were featured in the first movie. A sequel could be more creative in order to bring Hawke’s Grabber back into the action. Either way, audiences would likely turn up in droves to see a new movie. If Derrickson went the sequel route, they could always find a way to bring the Grabber into the potential sequel’s action in a horrifying, nightmarish way.

Ethan Hawke has found a nice niche for himself starring in terrifying horror movies. The Black Phone, Sinister and The Purge all enjoyed healthy box-office runs. Playing the Grabber solidified the actor’s ability to play a freak and his character had no redeeming values whatsoever in the original picture. Audiences loved to hate him as a result.

There was certainly a major supernatural aspect to The Black Phone which makes bringing Hawke back in a sequel rather than a prequel a real possibility. Derrickson also directed Hawke in Sinister so the pair definitely have a history of making scary movies together. It would also be interesting to see Mason Thames (who played the main child who was kidnapped in The Black Phone) come back again as well for another film.

Of course, there is no guarantee at this point that Ethan Hawke would sign up for another The Black Phone film. He would need to have a conversation with his agent and, of course, one with Derrickson to make the project a “go.”  Horror fans will want to get the spooky calls back on screen again in a sequel and are hoping that Hawke can reprise his role as the Grabber again under the accomplished director Derrickson’s guidance.
