MICHAEL (2025): Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson Biopic Could Be Delayed and Split into Two Parts

Troubled Michael Jackson Biopic Gets More Complicated
News has arisen that the Antoine Fuqua-helmed Michael Jackson biopic from Lionsgate could be delayed and split into two parts to deal with a recent troubling scenario.
An upcoming Michael Jackson biopic in which Jaafar Jackson will play the King of Pop, Michael, is possibly going to be split into two parts and, most likely, have its release date delayed from its original October 2025 date. Because the movie is leaning towards a four-hour running time, Fuqua may have to take down his movie’s running time a notch. Well, that’s one option anyway.
To make matters even more puzzling, one of Jackson’s accusers, Jordan Chandler, cannot be showcased in the new biopic for privacy and legal reasons. There are people behind the biopic who need to restructure what they are doing with this film thanks to this recently discovered stipulation which seemingly got lost in the shuffle the first time around.
Also featured in Michael are Nia Long and Colman Domingo, two really big stars in their own right, as Katherine and Joe Jackson, respectively. It also features Miles Teller. This upcoming project was once deemed a can’t-miss prestige film, but things are getting in the way of it coming to the silver screen on-time. It’s clear that the filmmakers of this forthcoming project need to be diligent and release the film the best way they can, but delaying the movie’s release will give the studio more time in terms of figuring all the kinks out.
Though the fact that the new biopic got no real recent coverage at the latest CinemaCon doesn’t exactly work in its favor, most industry insiders were expecting Michael to be a big hit in terms of its box-office grosses regardless. If released on time, those grosses for Michael wouldn’t look promising right now. It’s clear this movie needs more work behind the scenes which probably suggests it won’t make its October 3rd release date.
Would splitting this movie into two parts help? Probably not, but hoping for a four-hour movie to be a big hit at the box-office is just not realistic as evidenced by the nearly four hours long, Killers of the Flower Moon, which fizzled out at the domestic box-office with way under $100 million against a budget of well over that enormous figure.
Putting the Jackson film into two parts is an idea that worked for fiction projects such as Harry Potter, Wicked and Twilight, but people may be more eager to see the finished true story movie if it came out as one expertly cut film that ran around two hours and fifteen minutes or so. As we wait to see what will happen with this Michael film, one can listen to the King of Pop’s old songs while looking forward to hearing them in the movie when the biopic eventually comes out. It could just make year-end awards season if it’s as good as people are hoping it will be despite the fact it has been plagued by at least a few re-shoots.
