Mickey 17, the latest film from director Bong Joon Ho, is escaping the doldrums of a January theatrical release to become a major movie event to lift off at theaters in April 2025.

Robert Pattinson isn’t waiting for his latest The Batman movie to come out to let audiences see him on the big screen again. He’s appearing in legendary movie director Bong Joon Ho (Parasite)’s science-fiction film, Mickey 17, from Warner Bros. Some insiders were worried the film’s originally planned release on January 31, 2025 would make it seem like an insignificant January release but now, the movie will be coming out on a probably more financially prosperous date – April 18, 2025.

The eagerly awaited Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, was originally slated to come out on April 18th but Lionsgate pushed that film to October 3rd of 2025 instead seemingly to get it more attention at the box-office and, most likely, to make it more appealing for awards consideration as well. This opens up the window to make the two-hour plus Mickey 17 a big-time spring movie-going event. People are curious to see what Bong Joon Ho has been up to and there’s no ruling Mickey 17 out from becoming a potential awards contender next year at this particular point in time.

Drew Hancock’s horror film, Companion, has moved to January 31, 2025 in Mickey 17‘s place. This distances the seemingly intriguing Companion from other films which are likely to be January stinkers that will release around Companion‘s original January 10th release date. Oscar-worthy holdovers from the previous year tend to make money on the first few weeks of January while Hollywood dumps its undesirable movies to theaters as alternatives to those who don’t seem to attend Academy Award-worthy films.

Parasite stunned the movie world in 2019 when it won the Best Picture Oscar over hopefuls like Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood and The Irishman. Though those films, which were directed by Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese, lost out in major categories, the win by Parasite put Bong Joon Ho on the map as a true Hollywood filmmaking contender who could play against the big boys.

Robert Pattinson has appeared in blockbusters like the Twilight films and The Batman so his new sci-fi picture is expected to be a major box-office player. Bong Joon Ho is one of the most interesting and brilliant directors working today so expectations are high from an artistic standpoint for Mickey 17 as well. With the one-two punch of Bong Joon Ho and the ever-relatable Pattinson, expect the wildly creative Mickey 17 to enjoy a healthy opening weekend around Eastertime in 2025. Warner Bros. plans to release the new picture in IMAX too which was expected given its visually appealing effects and set design.
