SCREAM 7 (2024): Christopher Landon Could Be in the Director’s Seat for Next Installment of Horror Series

Scream 7 Could Be Helmed by Happy Death Day Director

Christopher Landon is rumored to be the choice to direct the seventh potential installment in the wildly popular Scream horror film series.

While nothing is official quite yet regarding a seventh installment in the Scream series (possibly due to the current strikes), the smart money is on Christopher Landon to direct it if it does, indeed, happen. Landon is a horror filmmaker who had a smash hit with Happy Death Day and a moderately successful sequel in Happy Death Day 2U. Scream 7 will most likely be a “go” at some point soon given Scream 6‘s $108 million domestic box-office gross earlier this year.

Landon’s Happy Death Day from 2017 made a terrific $55 million domestically and another $69 million internationally. It scored a solid “B” CinemaScore mark from opening night viewers. Oddly, enough the sequel Happy Death Day 2U also earned a “B” but was met with less lofty box-office grosses. It grossed about half of its predecessor at the domestic box-office in 2019. Still, Landon’s ability to tell a Groundhog Day sort of horror tale with these Happy Death Day movies was deemed admirable by his peers and audiences.

Melissa Barrera (Carmen) could be returning to the series in a role she did tremendously well in the past two Scream pictures. It would also be nice to see Neve Campbell come back on board the series as well after taking some time off with the last film due to unmet salary expectations. If the seventh film in the series does happen, it will tentatively be released in 2024.

While Landon has been declared a horror movie genius, his previous horror film, Freaky, got smashed financially by the pandemic. It only made $9 million at the height of the pandemic when it was released despite a cast which included the great Vince Vaughn. Freaky got a “B-” CinemaScore suggesting that it wasn’t the best work Landon has done so far in terms of viewer opinions.

The last two consecutive years (2022 and 2023) have offered Scream movies which were successful even in the middle of America. Fans loved Ghostface (the killer(s) in these pictures). Ghostface was revealed to be two different people in the last movie (or was it three?) and audiences are gearing up for another Scream picture only this time, you’ll be better at guessing the killer(s) if you have a scorecard by your disposal.

Scream 7 would be another attempt by the franchise to secure $100 million at the domestic box-office. Under Landon’s guidance, the film could be clever enough to reach its goal. Landon’s unique touch could be just what the doctor ordered to keep the series intelligent and continue to feel fresh to viewers.
