SHREK 5: Animated Sequel Reuniting Original Stars Set for July 2026 Release
5th Animated Shrek Movie is in the Works for 2026
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz will be reuniting in a fifth Shrek movie which is scheduled to be released on July 1, 2026.
In a fun piece of movie news, it was revealed that a fifth entry in the wildly popular Shrek animated film series is coming into fruition. Eddie Murphy, who voices a character, Donkey, in the franchise let the news slip out and revealed that he is already doing voice-over work for the new installment of the series. It was also made known that a spin-off series for the Donkey character will also be making its way to the screen in the same way in which the Puss in Boots standalone movies were released.
Cameron Diaz, of course, will once again serve as Shrek’s love interest, Fiona and Mike Myers will reprise his role as the beloved title character- the fun-loving ogre of the movie’s title, Shrek, himself. This sequel has been a long time in the coming as the series ended with a bit of a thud back in 2010 with the artistically disappointing, Shrek Forever After. That fourth installment did OK financially but didn’t perform as strongly as the previous movies did either financially or artistically speaking. It didn’t even match the domestic box-office grosses of the original Shrek.
Still, absence has made the heart grow fonder for fans of the series and 14 years without a Shrek feature film feels like a bit of a long haul. Eddie Murphy fans are excited at the prospect of seeing Donkey again and, also, to see Donkey in his own set of movies. This series will be done in almost the same fashion as the Antonio Banderas Puss in Boots pictures. There’s no guarantee at this time that Puss in Boots, the character, will be showcased in director Walt Dohrn’s Shrek 5.
The Shrek series has been DreamWorks Animation’s most cherished set of films. 2004’s Shrek 2 was recently re-released for its 20th anniversary and while it didn’t exactly break records during a brief theatrical run, there’s no reason to think a new picture wouldn’t bring in huge crowds. Myers, Murphy and Diaz are like a Hollywood movie dream team and their vocal talents always lend themselves to humorous interpretations of funny situations in the zany plots that were showcased in the previous pictures.
So, save the date: July 1, 2026 is when Shrek and company will be returning to the big screen for yet another series of adventures. The first movie in the Donkey spin-off series doesn’t seem to have a planned date of release yet but keep your eyes peeled for news of that particular set of projects as soon as details are revealed.
