In “early Hollywood,” Columbia Pictures rivaled other big studios like MGM, Warner Bros. and Paramount. Needless to say, Columbia stood strong against its competition and has had some films that have scored big throughout its 100 years’ history.

Some of Columbia Pictures’ most celebrated movies include It Happened One Night, On the Waterfront, Taxi Driver, Tootsie and the Ghostbusters pictures. Columbia also released Groundhog Day back in 1993 which has since developed quite a following over the past 30 years which included it being an inspiration for a popular Broadway musical show.

Spider-Man: No Way Home remains Columbia Pictures’ biggest blockbuster of all-time which is all the more special since the picture collected $814 million domestically, most which was made during the recent pandemic. The top 10 of Columbia Pictures’ most financially successful pictures also include movies such as Jumanji: The Next Level, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, several other Spider-Man movies and a James Bond film: Skyfall.

Will Smith was also a big player in successful Columbia Pictures movies such as Men in Black, Hancock and Hitch. Columbia has also made plenty of prestigious films that were bound for Best Picture Oscar glory. A couple of memorable ones are Kramer vs. Kramer and Gandhi.

It was not all “highs” for the studio. Columbia Pictures distributed Ishtar in 1987. It was a hugely budgeted movie which did poor business at the box-office despite showcasing the talents of then mega-stars, Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty. Columbia overcame that movie’s disaster-like box-office performance to shine bright.

The new logo is beautiful and is going to start playing before movies soon. 2024 will mark 100 years of diverse projects which were released by the successful studio.

Many people remember such comedy gems from the studio as Big Daddy from 1999 which starred Adam Sandler in one of his most wildly popular movies. That film was a commercial success as was Sean Connery’s hit 2000 dramatic movie, Finding Forrester. It’s hard to believe it has been almost 23 years since the near-Christmas day weekend on which that great movie was released in theaters.

Columbia has plans to celebrate its anniversary so keep your eyes open for special screenings and more specific situations surrounding this tremendous milestone. Happy 100th, Columbia Pictures! Keep up the great work and bring us another 100 years of the finest entertainment in the industry.
