Vin Diesel Could Be Returning as Xander Cage

Vin Diesel will most likely be playing his roles as Xander Cage and Riddick again in sequels to previous films Diesel starred in.

xXx 4 could mark the return of Vin Diesel to a role other than Dominic Toretto. Diesel has been in so many The Fast and the Furious series films that audiences may be itching to see him reprise his role as Xander Cage after 2017’s hugely successful film, xXx: Return of Xander Cage.

The release of xXx from 2002 saw Diesel grace the cover of GQ magazine with flames behind him as he was clearly at the start of his Hollywood blockbuster phase. He was fresh off The Fast and the Furious and starred in xXx which grossed $142 domestically and $135 million internationally. As proof that Diesel was the glue that held the film together, a sequel with Ice Cube crashed and burned at the box-office in 2005. In 2017, the third xXx movie generated a mere $44 million in the United States and Canada. So, why is a third Diesel movie in development with such a low gross? That 2017 action extravaganza made over $300 million internationally. That’s why.

People just liked Diesel better in the xXx movies than Ice Cube judging from the fact that Diesel’s movies earned “A-” CinemaScores versus Cube’s film’s “B+.” Riddick: Furya is also on the horizon with the return of David Twohy, the director who made Diesel a science fiction movie star with the hit Pitch Black back in 2000. Diesel seemed to like playing Riddick since he initially chose to play Riddick over Xander again first which is what led to the casting of Ice Cube in the second xXx film.

Let’s not forget that Diesel is still at it playing Toretto in Fast and Furious movies. Fast X made more money internationally than it did domestically which saved face for the action picture which was released earlier this year. If one were to look at the $145 million domestic gross for Fast X, one could be slightly disappointed. However, grossing $558 million overseas is nothing to sneeze at and those international grosses keep Diesel alive in the action movie industry.

When audiences will see Diesel in the new action sequel roles remains to be seen. An 11th Fast and Furious movie will be coming out in 2025. Perhaps, Diesel’s other action hero movies (which are currently in development) will be released around 2025 or maybe even some time after. While Diesel is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, he is not bulletproof at the box-office. Bloodshot made just $12 million in 2020 but that was because of the pandemic. No sequel is officially slated for that particular picture at this time.
