Actress Regina Hall Slated to Co-Host This Year’s Academy Awards

After winning acclaim at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Regina Hall is now set to co-host the Oscars.

There were other actresses with more than one film at Sundance this year, but Regina Hall hit the ball out of the park and then some with her outstanding performances in two of the films that played there: Master and Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. Now, Hall will be co-hosting the 94th Academy Awards in Los Angeles on March 27th. She’s in good company with funny ladies, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes, but Hall has one thing going for her the other two co-hosts do not: Hall deserves to be nominated for one of these Oscar awards next year!

Hall has been on a roll ever since starring in 2017’s road comedy, Girls Trip. It isn’t every day that a comedy gets a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but Girls Trip did. Hall was the heart and soul of the movie and received almost unanimous acclaim for her role in the movie. She was recently cast in the sequel to the 1988 action/comedy Midnight Run opposite Robert De Niro which is in her future but in her present are the two great performances she gave in the Sundance films, Master and Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. One problem, though: awards rarely honor horror films and comedies. That could change, however.

Hall’s performances in both aforementioned Sundance films were more than noteworthy, and she deserves serious consideration for awards for her work in Master where she played a character who realizes the higher education system has massive flaws that can allow a good student to fall through the cracks. This film also conveys the issue of race relations which makes it similar to Get Out from 2017 which was nominated for an Oscar the same year Girls Trip came out.

In the comedy Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul, Hall gave a performance to be commended as the wife of a pastor who ends up questioning her morals and values by the end of the film. She nailed this role as well and if I were voting, I’d say this performance was almost as great as her work in the more serious Master. Hall almost single-handedly made that comedy from Sundance a success.

Amy Schumer was seen in 2015’s box-office hit Trainwreck for which she won much acclaim and has followed that film up with other roles while Wanda Sykes has built a career on playing funny supporting characters in comic films. They are both fantastic at what they do and, alongside the distinguished Hall, should bring dignity and humor back to Academy Award ceremonies.

While it’s only February, I’m keeping Hall in my memory as an actress to remember come awards consideration time later this year. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to this year’s much anticipated Oscar ceremony where Hall is bound to impress.
