This forthcoming film, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, is based on a book that has earned terrific sales thus far which should translate into a major box-office hit. Kirkus Reviews called the new book “heartbreaking.” This 2026 film release will focus on Panem before the rise of Katniss from the earlier movies. It will center around the 50th Hunger Games where a character named Haymitch Abernathy rises. Abernathy will be portrayed by Joseph Zada. Plemons will play the character known as Plutarch Heavensbee who is expected to have a fair chunk of screen time in the movie.

Besides those two stars, the new Hunger Games movie will feature Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner and Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird. Peak is known for her work on shows like “Gossip Girl” and movies like Molly’s Game whereas Grace has played in two recent Ghostbusters movies even though she primarily sings for a living. Grace created a song, “Haunted House” for the 2021 Ghostbusters sequel release which was a big hit.

Heavensbee is a “future rebellion leader” and was played by Oscar-winning actor, Philip Seymour Hoffman, in the original set of Hunger Games movies. One can easily see the resemblance between the late Hoffman and Plemons which makes the casting all the more exciting. This upcoming film will most likely be ready for release on its scheduled premiere date, November 20, 2026. It is expected to be a box-office smash just like the prior installment in the franchise, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, and the Jennifer Lawrence-led movies that came before that one.

Plemons is also known for his roles in movies like the hugely provocative I’m Thinking of Ending Things, The Power of the Dog (for which he received a Best Supporting Actor nomination), Killers of the Flower Moon and Kinds of Kindness. He was also seen playing opposite Robert De Niro (also, his Killers of the Flower Moon co-star) in Zero Day recently. Plemons had a bit part in the fairly recent movie, Civil War, where he played with his real-life partner, Kirsten Dunst, who also received an Oscar nomination for co-starring in 2021’s Netflix movie sensation, The Power of the Dog.
