Kieran Culkin and Elle Fanning Board New Hunger Games Film

Kieran Culkin and Elle Fanning have joined the cast of the eagerly-awaited 2026 release, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Fresh off his Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor in A Real Pain, Kieran Culkin will be playing a major supporting role in the upcoming The Hunger Games prequel. Also recently cast in the forthcoming science fiction film was A Complete Unknown co-star, Elle Fanning. Culkin and Fanning will be playing younger versions of roles featured in the earlier The Hunger Games movies where both of their characters were a bit older and played by veteran performers.

Elle Fanning will be assuming the part of Effie Trinket who you may remember was played by Elizabeth Banks in the earlier movies. Meanwhile, Culkin will take on the role of Caesar Flickerman who was portrayed previously by the always formidable Stanley Tucci.

Caesar Flickerman is the “master of ceremonies” who interviews the tributes as they battle each other in the Hunger Games. Effie Trinket is the stylist that draws the names of those who participate in these said battles. Both Banks and Tucci’s roles in the earlier pictures were quite distinctly conveyed by these stars who previously inhabited the roles. Culkin and Fanning promise to offer fresh takes on the characters and will most likely make the younger versions their own creations.

Culkin certainly isn’t resting on his laurels these days as he’s been appearing on Broadway in Glengarry Glen Ross as well as celebrating the accomplishment of his Oscar win which he said would lead to him and his wife having a new child together upon receipt of the award. Fanning won the hearts of American audiences who lined up to see the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. Previously, she appeared in mainstream movies like We Bought a Zoo from Cameron Crowe and indie movies like Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere. She is set to appear in the new upcoming Predator movie subtitled Badlands.

Both of the newly cast young stars join master thespians such as Ralph Fiennes (who has been cast as President Snow) and Jesse Plemons in the new 2026 release which is aiming for release in November of that year. It is based on the Suzanne Collins bestseller of the same title which has garnered solid reviews from book critics.

Elle Fanning and Kieran Culkin may seem like they have pretty big shoes to fill, but they are most likely more than up to the task. Stanley Tucci and Elizabeth Banks were both excellent in these roles and set very high standards. It will be interesting to see if these newly cast stars can make these new performances as creative as the previous stars did in the older ones.
