THIS IS 50: Judd Apatow Has Plans for a Sequel to 2012’s Comic Box-Office Hit THIS IS 40

This is 50 Could Soon Be in the Works

Judd Apatow plans on making a sequel to his 2012 box-office smash, This is 40, which would be called, This is 50.

It’s a scheduling thing holding back comedy filmmaker, Judd Apatow, from making a follow-up to the well-received This is 40. That 2012 picture focused on a mid-life crisis and two married characters played by Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann. There didn’t seem to be much sequel potential at the time the movie was released but since the picture’s release, the film has garnered a lot more appreciation from its viewers. This is 40 only received a “B-” CinemaScore when it was originally released.

This is 50 would continue the story of a mid-life crisis into the next decade of the lives of its two central players, Rudd and Mann. Also in the original was comic genius, Albert Brooks, who had one of the most successful supporting performances of his career in the first movie from 2012. Brooks played Rudd’s struggling dad who always needed a monetary handout from his son. There is no decision as to whether or not Brooks would be back at all in the sequel right now.

When This is 40 came out, it made a healthy $67 million domestically. That was a lot less than the $148 million that Apatow’s Knocked Up earned in 2007 but the 2012 movie has had enough viewership over the years to suggest that audiences wouldn’t mind revisiting the story of Rudd and Mann’s characters as well as their children in the movie.

Apatow’s family (Mann is his wife)’s availability has a large part in just, exactly, when This is 50 could be coming out. Luckily, Paul Rudd doesn’t seem to age much physically which is similar to Tom Cruise’s inability to appear much older than he did when he was young. While Rudd probably won’t look older too soon, Apatow still may want to act sooner rather than later in terms of bringing the sequel, This is 50, into fruition. Eleven years is a long time to wait to decide to put a sequel to a moderately successful movie into motion. It sometimes feels like this project could be better suited for Peacock than for theatrical release but you never know. People could still be yearning for a sequel to This is 40.

This is 40 was really funny but Apatow better strike while the iron is still a little hot. That may include pulling his wife from other commitments to get the project done sooner rather than later, as previously stated. It could be several years before this follow-up project comes out which may make it easier to just skip ahead to This is 60. Timing will be everything in terms of seeing This is 50 actually get made by Apatow and company.
