Weekend Impressions

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be Number One at the box office over the weekend for the second week in a row. There are a few films that will open big this weekend but the weekend belongs to Star Wars: The Last Jedi. People that were not able to see the film last weekend will see it this weekend plus people that saw it last weekend, who liked what they saw, will go to see it again.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle will open in Second Place at the box office this weekend. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has almost everything going for it that Star Wars: The Last Jedi had when it opened last weekend: name recognition, bankable stars, a big budget, a PG-13 rating, humor, action, and fun. If it wasn’t for the presence of Star Wars, Jumanji 2 would be the Number One film this weekend.

The Greatest Showman will open in Third Place at the box office this weekend. Musical Les Miserables opened big for Hugh Jackman and Universal Pictures in 2012. 20th Century Fox is hoping for the same with muscial The Greatest Showman and Hugh Jackman in 2017. From all indications, The Greatest Showman won’t open as big as Les Miserables, but it will do well.

Pitch Perfect 3 will open in Fourth Place at the box office this weekend. Pitch Perfect 3, supposedly the last Pitch Perfect film in the series, has plucky returning cast members and the underdog feel that appeals to a certain movie-going demographic.

Downsizing will open in Fifth Place at the box office over the weekend. It stars Matt Damon and has a very interesting sci-fi plot gimmick.
