Left-Handed Girl Strives to Earn a Best International Feature Oscar Nomination Against Some Fierce Competition

Left-Handed Girl Strives to Earn a Best International Feature Oscar Nomination Against Some Fierce Competition

Netflix Hit Left-Handed Girl Fighting for a Best International Feature Nod

Netflix‘s small gem, Left-Handed Girl, faces an uphill battle to secure a Best International Feature Oscar nomination, but it could happen.

Oscar loves an underdog and this year, Left-Handed Girl, a hidden Netflix gem could be it. There is some big competition, however, for a little film like Left-Handed Girl. Neon’s It Was Just an Accident scored big at Cannes, but has gone home empty handed in terms of a Best International Feature award at the Critics Choice awards and the Golden Globes. Belén was once thought to be the little movie that would score big against the likes of It Was Just an Accident, but that movie has taken second fiddle to bigger films like The Secret Agent and Sirât.

The Academy Awards may have “no other choice” but to nominate -you guessed it-  No Other Choice, a huge box-office hit that is sweeping the country by surprise. That film is about a man who takes extreme measures to secure a job from some rather fierce competition in order to support his family. While Netflix’s gentle and moving, Left-Handed Girl, is certainly a very touching film, No Other Choice digs deep (and comically so as well) inside its volatile premise which makes it a neck-and-neck battle to the finish line for both pictures to garner that coveted Best International Film Oscar nomination.

The Voice of Hind Rajab is another moving international picture that is almost certain to win an Oscar nomination for its daring and provocative themes of trying to rescue a young girl from certain death against the odds. It is an underdog, much like Left-Handed Girl, when it comes to the possibility of it actually getting that nomination. The Secret Agent and It Was Just an Accident are pretty much assured nominations, but what will the other 3 pictures be that Oscar chooses to make the final cut?

Another remarkable film from Cannes that Neon distributed last year was Sentimental Value which is in the running for Best International Feature as well. Many peg that one as a shoo-in to secure a final spot among the top 5 international pictures of the year from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. That may be the sentimental movie that the Oscars decide to celebrate whereas including another tearjerker like Left-Handed Girl in the final five lineup may not ultimately happen.

We haven’t even considered the brilliant The President’s Cake, the three-hour long, Kokuho and the similarly lengthy horror picture, Sound of Falling, which were all recently emerging as late contenders that have a shot at an Oscar nod for Best International Film. It could be Left-Handed Girl, though, that is the sentimental favorite with last year’s Oscar-winner, director Sean Baker (Anora), behind the scenes on that film, the vote could be swayed in its favor.

In the final race, we believe the five international films that will be chosen will be Sentimental Value, Sirât, The Voice of Hind Rajab, It Was Just an Accident and The Secret Agent. Oscar loves an upset and loves an underdog and Left-Handed Girl could knock one of these films out of the loop if enough people love it. Remember that little movie that could, Babe, from 30 years ago about the pig that nobody saw coming for an Oscar nod? Left-Handed Girl could have that kind of stamina since it’s a truly moving little picture, but we have to see Thursday morning which way Oscar ultimately decides to go.
