MATERIALISTS (2025): Celine Song’s Follow-Up to PAST LIVES Sets a June Release Date

An Attractive Cast is Featured in Materialists Due This June

Celine Song‘s Materialists has set a release date of June 13th by its studio A24 and the film seems poised to be a modest success for the director and studio.

When Celine Song’s Past Lives came out, people noticed. A Sundance success that left tears in people’s eyes by the time the end credits rolled, Past Lives earned a Best Picture Oscar nomination for 2023 and topped FilmBook‘s 10-Best list as the Best Film of 2023. Song most likely hopes to duplicate that 2023 film’s success with her latest, Materialists, which will be coming out about a week before the start of summer on June 13th.

Dakota Johnson is the star of Materialists, and she plays a matchmaker who must choose between two romantic prospects: An ex and a new match who could be her ticket to lifelong blissful romance. Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal are the male talents featured in Song’s latest drama which most likely has a splash of humor as well. With star power like this, expect Materialists to have a shot at surpassing Past Lives‘ impressive $11 million domestic box-office run at the art houses.

Johnson has always been successful as a leading lady in romantic comedies, but this one will be a bit more complex than your typical romance. For one, Johnson almost always plays intelligent characters, and you can watch 2022’s Cha Cha Real Smooth or 2024’s Daddio to see her ability to keep her dignity intact while portraying vulnerable women. Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal are two of the most personable romantic leading men working today and will be perfect for Johnson to play opposite.

Set in New York City, you can probably figure that A24 plans to roll this new romance movie beyond the art houses and the studio is probably hoping for grosses north of $25 million if word of mouth is half as good on it as it was on Past Lives. Though some of Johnson’s romance films have struggled at the box-office after the Fifty Shades of Grey pictures, something tells me that Song could help make her new picture a success if it’s half as good and involving as Past Lives was.

I guess the big question mark regarding Materialists is whether or not Song can get the audience to be captivated by the characters the way she managed to do with Past Lives. Love triangles are certainly Celine Song’s thing, and she should be able to move mountains with her new high-profile cast on board which puts Johnson in the role of a character named Lucy. My guess is that moviegoers are simply going to love Lucy. A24 should have a nice hit on their hands that could play all summer long.
