DADDIO (2023): Sony Pictures Classics Sets an Early Summer Release Date for Indie Film

Dakota Johnson Daddio

Dark Drama Daddio Sets a Release Date

Daddio, directed by Christy Hall, is a recent film festival favorite and it has just been given a release date of June 28th by its distributor, Sony Pictures Classics.

Oscar winner Sean Penn is a true “actor’s actor” who always takes big risks on the projects he chooses. He will be starring in Daddio from Sony Pictures Classics which will be opening in late June. Despite her mediocre work in the forgettable Madame Web, Dakota Johnson almost always takes on challenging roles. It will be intriguing to see the two of them on-screen together in Daddio which is a movie that is pretty much set in a New York City taxicab for much of the picture’s running time.

Christy Hall wrote and directed Daddio which had its premiere at last year’s Telluride Film Festival. It also screened in Toronto as well. It is about childhood experiences, trauma and the human condition and is set primarily in a cab which will make it a unique film-going experience for fans of the movie’s two fine stars, in particular.

While the Oscar-winning Penn has always been an actor who has taken on complex roles, Johnson also, surprisingly enough, seems to fearlessly try out new things with each and every role she takes. Daddio is a big risk for both of these performers as it may not be a huge box-office smash or an Oscar-caliber film but, rather, a curiosity piece for fans of creative independent cinema. Of course, Sony Pictures Classics probably hopes all audiences looking for an alternative to big summer box-office blockbusters will come out in droves to see Daddio in theaters.

The competition for Daddio on opening weekend is fierce. There’s Kevin Costner’s epic, Horizon: An American Saga and A Quiet Place: Day One to compete with. While those films will have large theater counts, Daddio will most likely have a more conservative release strategy under its wing. It may prove to be a movie that could build strong word of mouth on the independent movie circuit scene and emerge as a modest summer hit.

Penn wowed the audiences who actually saw his dramatic gem, Flag Day, back in 2021. However, not too many people actually got to see that movie due to its release date which was around the time of the pandemic when adults weren’t going to the movies. Daddio gives the acclaimed actor a chance to resurrect his career with a performance which is said to be one of his best recent turns in early reviews for the film. Johnson is always interesting as an actress and the two of them on screen together should ignite some serious heavy drama come June 28th.
