Austin Butler in Talks to Appear in Miami Vice

Austin Butler is said to be a definite possibility to play Sonny Crockett in another Miami Vice picture which is coming out about 20 years after the release of the last one.

Director Joseph Kosinski is following in Michael Mann’s footsteps by trying to bring another version of the hit 1980’s action-packed TV Show, Miami Vice, to the silver screen. Kosinski may have found his two leads in Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler, but negotiations are still underway as to when these casting choices will be finalized. Jordan would, of course, play Tubbs, the role made famous by Philip Michael Thomas This new remake would come out in early August of 2027. Butler’s potential role was made famous by Don Johnson on the TV show.

In 2006, Michael Mann made Miami Vice into a movie which was released on DVD in two different cuts. It was basically a mess despite doing fairly well at the box-office. It holds a weak 47% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was overlong and bloated by any standards. Running over 2 grueling hours in length, the saving grace of that remake was that the cast was decent. It featured Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in the lead roles. The cast helped the 2006 movie secure $163 million worldwide in box-office grosses, however disappointed fans were with the picture. It scored just a pitiful “B-” CinemaScore grade and audiences were definitely being generous back then.

It is likely director Kosinski can re-tool the Miami Vice name with his excellent past couple of films suggesting he has what it takes to make the new film work. His last movies, F1: The Movie and Top Gun: Maverick, were well-received box-office successes which scored with critics as well, earning terrific reviews. It is unlikely the new Miami Vice would be boring like the 2006 movie under Kosinski’s accomplished hands.

Michael B. Jordan is said to be in the running for an Oscar nod for his work in this year’s great horror movie, Sinners. Butler recently appeared in filmmaker Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing which was a pleasant late summer diversion which earned respectable reviews last August. Butler is most well-known for his Oscar-nominated work in the great 2022 film, Elvis.

This new Miami Vice is said to have a script that will closely follow the pilot episode and first season of the old TV show. While it’s doubtful this new movie would earn Butler or Jordan Oscar nods, it should be a nice box-office success because if the last film version of Miami Vice made money, this movie should have no problem earning much more as long as its halfway decent and with the cast and director at its core right now, that should be a no-brainer.
