Weekend Impressions:

The Fate of the Furious will be the Number One film at the box office over the weekend. It’s guaranteed, so much so that the film could have been called The Legacy of the Furious. The film has a story-line that goes back more than a decade with characters and motivations that the viewer comes into the theater already knowing. Those motivations get turned on their head in this film with Vin Diesel‘s character going evil. Fans of the series will go to the theater to find out why.

This is also the Fast film after Paul Walker‘s untimely and tragic death. Fans will want to see how the series moves on from his involvement.

The Boss Baby will be Number Two this weekend. It debuted far higher than people were expecting two weeks ago and the animated film for closers shows no signs of weakening. A sequel is bound to materialize in the next three or four years.

Beauty and the Beast will be Number Three. Like The Boss Baby, Beauty and the Beast exceeded most analyst’s expectations. The question is, will and how will Disney create a franchise out of what was built as a stand-alone film?

Smurfs: The Lost Village will be Number Fourth.

Going in Style will be Fifth at the box office this weekend. Unless it finds an audience, this will be the last weekend that Going in Style is in the Top Five at the box office.
