ORPHAN 3: Long-Awaited Horror Movie Sequel Is Now Officially a “Go”

Isabelle Fuhrman Orphan First Kill

Orphan 3 Given the Go-Ahead

An eagerly awaited horror sequel, Orphan 3, will be coming into fruition with a new studio for the franchise, Lionsgate, behind the scenes.

Another Orphan film is set to go into production, and it will once again star Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther, the demented psycho killer featured in the two previous films. Behind the production, Orphan: First Kill writer David Coggeshall and director William Brent Bell will be boarding the new project alongside the sensational Fuhrman who simply “killed it” in the first two pictures as she played an older woman posing as a child who slices and dices those who get in the way of her secret to living as a kid.

Dark Castle Entertainment and Lionsgate will present the film at the American Film Market. While Lionsgate is going to “handle” the film internationally, it is uncertain which studio will release the picture domestically. Warner Bros. released the first film to big box-office numbers in 2009 and Paramount Players handled the distribution of the second picture (a prequel) which was released in 2022 to a slightly less financially prosperous release but still a handsome one, nevertheless.

Fuhrman has gone on to some great things from an artistic standpoint, but her roots are in the Orphan franchise so it must be hard to let go of the role of Esther for her. The actress received raves for her work in the 2021 rowing drama, The Novice. At the Tribeca Festival in June 2021, The Novice picked up a couple of key awards, one for Fuhrman’s work as an actress in the challenging dramatic picture. Recently, Fuhrman was in the little seen Kevin Costner western, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1.

Orphan: First Kill was a solid prequel where Julia Stiles terrifically played a badass mom opposite the always reliable Fuhrman. The first Orphan movie before that featured the great Vera Farmiga and got terrific reviews from major film critics like the late, great Roger Ebert. It has one of the most surprising endings ever for a horror film and remains one of the most bone-chilling scary movies of all-time. The second movie, while good, was not as well-received as the first one.

We previously ran a story a little less than a year or so ago that stated that a third Orphan movie may have been coming into fruition, but the news is now official as the project has been given the necessary “green light.” It will be interesting to see which release strategy is taken with the new picture. The first Orphan got a full-blown theatrical release in a traditional form while the second film had a same “day-and-date” premiere streaming date which corresponded to the movie’s theatrical release.
