Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Talks to Star in New Thriller
Mary Elizabeth Winstead has been in negotiations to join the forthcoming remake, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, from 20th Century Studios.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead (AKA Ramona Flowers from the 2010 gem, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) is most likely going to be playing a mom in the upcoming remake of the 1992 psycho from hell movie, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. The upcoming thriller from 20th Century Studios will also showcase Maika Monroe (Longlegs) as the vicious character who offsets the good mom in the film’s life significantly.
In early 1992, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle was a surprise box-office smash from one of Disney’s adult division studios. It grabbed an impressive $88 million at the domestic box-office and starred Annabella Sciorra in the part Winstead will probably be portraying in the upcoming picture. In 1992, Rebecca DeMornay originally played the part Monroe will assume in the new remake.
The original picture had an impressive marketing strategy which heavily previewed the film in the major markets and led the film to go on to score an “A-” grade from CinemaScore. In contrast, one of Disney’s other thrillers from later that year, Consenting Adults, bombed with a “B-” CinemaScore and a mere $21 million gross. The Hand That Rocks the Cradle was one of the biggest “psycho from hell” movies that were made around that original time period that included the likes of Unlawful Entry and Single White Female. These types of movies helped originate with the wild box-office success of 1987’s Fatal Attraction.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead played opposite John Goodman in the 2016 science fiction box-office hit, 10 Cloverfield Lane but these days, she’s known best for her involvement with partner, Ewan McGregor, and the show, A Gentleman in Moscow. She’s also, of course, known for the Disney hit, “Ahsoka.” But a role in Final Destination 3 and her breakout part in the comedy gem, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, is where her talent originated.
Whereas Maika Monroe has a history of playing in horror movies of late when considering her filmography (It Follows from 2014 was her biggest horror film other than the recent Longlegs), Winstead could probably be deemed the original scream queen out of the two of them. Winstead’s old horror roles were just as prolific as Monroe’s have been and Winstead shone back in the day playing parts in wild, scary movies. it will be a dream team with them working together playing rivals in a The Hand That Rocks the Cradle remake.
