Laura Linney Film Acquired by Sony Pictures Classics

Oscar-nominated actress, Laura Linney‘s latest movie, The Miracle Club, has been purchased for distribution by Sony Pictures Classics.

Director Thaddeus O’Sullivan’s new movie, The Miracle Club, has been picked up for release by Sony Pictures Classics, a studio which is known for being on-point in terms of successfully campaigning its films for awards nominations. Last year’s Sundance “fave,” Living is a prime example when one considers how the studio helped nab a prestigious Oscar nomination for that film’s star, Bill Nighy, for Best Actor. Through their persistent awards campaign, Nighy made the cut in a very competitive category. Could Sony Pictures Classics campaign the star of The Miracle Club, Laura Linney, for award nods next year? With Linney’s Academy Award nomination track record, that could most certainly happen.

Also starring in the eagerly awaited movie, The Miracle Club, are screen veterans Maggie Smith and Kathy Bates. This film is about some aging women from the village of Ballygar in Dublin, Ireland who yearn to go to the French miracle town of Lourdes which could change their lives forever if they just get to make it there. It’s said to be a moving film about learning to truly value the friendship of others and appreciating the joys and beauty found in every day life.

Linney is one of our most accomplished actresses. She is known mostly for her part as Jim Carrey’s wife in the hit, The Truman Show but scored Oscar nods for her great turns in movies like You Can Count on Me and Kinsey, to name two of the three films with her Academy Award nominated performances. The Savages was the other one. Bates, we just announced yesterday, is attached to a new comedy with Diane Keaton called Summer Camp as well as The Miracle Club. It’s a busy year for the very versatile Bates. Maggie Smith is fresh off rave reviews for her hit film, Downton Abbey: A New Era.

Sony Pictures Classics is a studio that is known for offering the best of independent cinema. Midnight in Paris is one of their most honored and successful films to date and also co-starred the prolific Kathy Bates. When a Sony Pictures Classics film adds a bit of culture to one of their movies, miracles certainly seem to happen. The Miracle Club definitely has all the ingredients of a film with potential to play extraordinarily well on the art house circuits. While we don’t know the timing of its release, the smart money would suggest either a summer release or a Christmas release where it would be very much taken seriously as an awards contender. Also featured in the upcoming film is Agnes O’Casey.
