THE SUBSTANCE (2024): Acclaimed Demi Moore Horror Film Enters Golden Globes Race in the Musical/Comedy Category
The Substance Enters Globes in Different Category Than Was Expected
Demi Moore is enjoying a year where she could be a finalist in the Oscar race and her horror film, The Substance, has been categorized as a musical/comedy for consideration for the Golden Globes.
Maybe MUBI’s The Substance is a unique, bold horror film but it also happens to have moments of hilarity in terms of just how far it goes with its gore. Therefore, in an interesting series of events, The Substance, will be going into the Golden Globes race as a potential contender for the Musical/Comedy categories. In any year, it would be rude to not nominate the hard-working Demi Moore for her role in the aforementioned film. That would hold true for Margaret Qualley who backs up Moore and then some in her showy supporting role within the picture. However, the likelihood of both actresses making the final cut in their respective categories could be somewhat slim at the present time.
This is not the first time a movie has gone into the less competitive Musical/Comedy category at the Globes. Otherwise, Moore would be in a race with Saoirse Ronan (The Outrun), Tilda Swinton (The Room Next Door) and Angelina Jolie (Maria) in the Drama category. Let’s not mention another Moore- Julianne Moore (also of the great film, The Room Next Door). Sometimes these efforts are successful and, other times, they are not. It could feel like category fraud for The Substance to run for consideration in the chosen category but it’s also true that the movie is so over-the-top that it must intend to make people laugh, thus the category choice of Musical/Comedy would hold weight.
The Globes may sneak Moore into the Best Actress race on that show but the Oscars are a whole other animal. It will take plenty of brave Oscar voters to sit through the whole movie The Substance. Still, the quality of Moore’s work as an actress is evident even before all the gore appears on-screen in the last thirty minutes of the movie. No scratch that, the last hour of the film. This is a picture that knows no boundaries and it will either get rewarded or shunned by Oscar’s choice. Neither decision by the Academy would surprise me.
Mikey Madison’s tremendous work in Anora would put her as a potential front-runner in the same category Moore would be competing with her in at the Globes. The problem with ignoring Moore for both the Oscars and the Globes is that if they snub her, it will enforce the message of The Substance that aging people don’t get the respect they deserve. If Qualley got into Best Supporting Actress and Moore failed to get a nod, it would make the message of The Substance more valid and who wants that? That message is aging sucks. While that’s partly true, it will take time to see if Moore will make the cut come Golden Globe nomination time for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.
