Three Movies Will Be Made Based on Nicholas Sparks Books

Best-selling romance novelist Nicholas Sparks has three upcoming feature films set to be based on his hugely popular recent books.

When the Nicholas Sparks novel-based film, Message in a Bottle, came out in 1999, romance movie fans were won over by the on-screen chemistry between Kevin Costner and Robin Wright (Penn, at the time). Who cares about the critics? That movie made a whopping $52 million domestically despite poor reviews from critics like Roger Ebert. The news got even better for Sparks adaptations when 2004’s The Notebook (a movie industry example of a “little movie that could”) earned a remarkable $81 million (and scored a positive review from Ebert). Now, after some hits and some misses, the author of these romantic book-based movies, Sparks, has three more forthcoming films which will be based on his immensely popular novels. Universal Pictures will be releasing these pictures.

Perhaps, the most eagerly awaited of the three upcoming films is The Wish, a- what else? – sad love story about the power of first romances. Readers have discovered the emotions of this book and are eagerly anticipating the movie adaptation. Dreamland, an upcoming Sparks novel, is also an intriguing romantic tale. This one is about taking risks to achieve one’s dreams. Finally, the other film which will be adapted is going to be based on the book The Return and will showcase the tale of a Navy doctor who gets hurt and finds himself torn between the secrets of two different women. This latter book has only a 3.9 Goodreads rating but is bound to appeal to the majority of Sparks’s movie-going fans.

There’s more news as well. The Notebook is going to be made into a Broadway musical. The film on which it is based on is a signature Sparks blockbuster which featured Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams and serves as the gold standard of post-Titanic romance movies.

Many actresses such as Mandy Moore, Amanda Seyfried and Miley Cyrus have appeared in past Sparks adaptations. These book-based movies always attract the brightest talents Hollywood has to offer. May I suggest the always intriguing Selena Gomez or the wonderful Dakota Johnson as a potential lead in one of the upcoming projects? Johnson, herself, has a history of book-based film work with her turn in the Fifty Shades of Grey movies.

Universal Pictures is a dream home for Sparks’s work. The legendary author is thrilled to be working with the movie studio which constantly excels in releasing quality products. While I venture one or two critics may not be on board with these upcoming tearjerkers, “A” CinemaScores could be forthcoming if the pictures are as moving as past Sparks adaptations have been.
