Splash Remake Still Happening with Jillian Bell

Funny lady Jillian Bell is attached to a project that is in the works which is a reboot of the 1984 hit mermaid out of water comedy, Splash.

When Ron Howard came on to the directing scene with the comedy blockbuster (for the time), Splash, moviegoers took notice. Splash made $69 million which was excellent back in 1984. Now, after a story that arose years ago stating that a reboot was in the works, it has been revealed that there is still a reworking of the original 1984 movie, Splash, that is going to happen. Jillian Bell is still part of the project although the original male lead, Channing Tatum, seems to have bailed.

Sarah Rothschild is writing the remake of the 1984 comedy that starred Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah as an ordinary guy and the mermaid he falls in love with. Jillian Bell may be playing the Tom Hanks role in a gender reversal of the original script but that is just a hypothetical scenario at this particular point in time. Nothing is concrete as to the specific details of the plot at this current time.

Bell is most well known for her lead role in the funny 2019 indie comedy, Brittany Runs a Marathon. That film made a smooth $7 million, mostly on the art house circuits. Bell is also recognized for her hysterical work in 2020’s Godmothered. That movie had a nice size audience on Disney Plus during the height of the pandemic. In that picture, Bell appeared opposite another funny lady, Isla Fisher, who you may remember from Confessions of a Shopaholic. Splash will promise more of Bell in top comedic form.

The 1984 movie, Splash, also starred comic geniuses John Candy and Eugene Levy. That picture was a romantic comedy gem that helped launch Ron Howard into stardom as a filmmaker. It will be fun to see who will be in the supporting roles in the new upcoming film.

Jillian Bell also appeared in 2017’s moderately successful comedy, Rough Night, which starred Scarlett Johansson. It earned a decent $22 million domestically but only garnered a “C+” CinemaScore grade.

Bell’s upcoming Splash picture could go in two directions depending on who is cast in the other principal role. It could launch in theaters or go straight to Disney Plus where sequels to old movies seem to do quite well. The same could hold true for reboots.

Many fans of the original Ron Howard movie, Splash, will be hoping that the forthcoming reboot will be better than the disappointing television movie that aired in 1988 called Splash, Too. As more news is revealed on the upcoming reboot, more light will be shed on what exactly the plot of the new film will revolve around.
