The Brothers McMullen Sequel to Screen One Night Only

Fathom Entertainment will be showing The Family McMullen in theaters for one night only on October 15th.

One of the biggest successes ever to come out of Sundance in its earliest years was 1995’s Edward Burns gem, The Brothers McMullen. Now, some 30 years later, the sequel, The Family McMullen, will be screening at theaters nationwide for one night on October 15th thanks to Warner Bros. and Fathom Entertainment.

In 1995, The Brothers McMullen was made on a shoestring budget by Entertainment Tonight worker/former Hunter College student, Edward Burns. This movie only cost $25,000 before post-production costs and earned a whopping $10 million at the domestic box-office. It was a fairy tale success for Burns who, just a year later, went on to make a $3 million movie, She’s The One, with big-time stars, Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz. The Family McMullen continues the story line of the characters from the 1995 original picture which was released by Fox Searchlight.

In the new sequel’s story line, Connie Britton returns as the wife of Barry (Burns)’s now deceased brother. Mike McGlone, the real scene-stealer in the original movie, is back as well reprising his part from the first movie. Barry will now be a dad to two 20-something year olds. Most likely absent from the sequel will be Maxine Bahns who played Burns’s love interest in the original picture as they were really together when they made the old movie.

The first The Brothers McMullen was a quintessential New York story about a writer named Barry who tries to get help from his brother by living under his roof as he tries to get on his feet financially. McGlone played Patrick, the Irish-Catholic brother living with guilt as he leaves his first girlfriend for another local girl. There were great lines of dialogue in the old 1995 movie such as “Writers live in Manhattan, Barry. Joey Buttafuocos live on Long Island.” That 1995 movie also featured the great Sarah McLachlan song, “I Will Remember You,” at the film’s end credits.

While the new sequel, The Family McMullen, probably wouldn’t fly in a mainstream 3000 theater-plus release being that the first movie was just a small success, Fathom Entertainment and Warner Bros. are giving the opportunity to fans of the first movie to see the new sequel on the big screen. On October 15th, the film will be shown theatrically, and I will be attending a screening to see if the film lives up to the quality of the original. While it probably won’t, it will be great to see Burns, Britton and McGlone on-screen together again 30 years after the original touched America’s heart. Look for a review here of the new film after the screening.
