A name that would go on to destroy the hearts of children since it was uttered by the brave Atreyu (Noah Hathway) in the undeniably charming film adaptation of “The Neverending Story” from 1984.

Now, See-Saw Films, the production house behind Oscar winner “The King’s Speech” and Michael Ende Productions, will set out to create a fresh set of films to inspire a new generation of youth, as reported by Variety.

Just leave Artax alone!

The 1984 fantasy film was adapted from the 1979 novel by Michael Ende. The story centers around a young boy named Bastian Balthazar Buz, who skirts the punishing blows of local bullies by slipping into a local bookstore, where he steals a book aptly titled The Neverending Story and takes it back to school devouring the pages while hiding out in the attic. There, he encounters a world of wonder that is under attack from an unknown force simply known as the nothing.

The 1979 book would go on to become a bestseller, selling millions of copies worldwide, before Wolfgang Peterson would bring Michael Ende’s mesmerizing tale to life in his 1984 film.

See-Saw films garnered much attention from their 2011 Best Picture-winning film “The King’s Speech,” which was an adaptation of a stage play by the late David Seidler. More recently, they are the production house behind other literally adaptions “The Power of the Dog” and “Lion.” In an interview with Variety, Iain Canning of See-Saw Productions said, “The story is both timely and timeless, and really has an opportunity to be told in a fresh way.”

Roman Hocke and Ralph Gassman will work in conjunction with See-Saw Films for Michael Ende Productions to bring the new set of films to the screen. Hocke, an author in his own right and long-time editor to Michael Ende and his estate curator, told Variety, “We need stories like we need the air to breathe and water to survive. They give our inner worlds quality and with this quality we make decisions of quality. Stories make the world better,” he continued, “The Neverending Story’ is the story of all stories.”

While the number of films and specifics behind exactly what See-Saw and Michael Ende Productions have in mind has not been established yet, it marks an exciting new chapter for fans of the 1979 book, 1984 film, and anyone who had their hearts ripped out of their chests at the saddening fate of our beloved Artax.
