TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE Crossover Film Still a Definite Possibility

Close Up Transfomers Rise Of The Beasts

The Transformers and G.I. Joe Franchises Could Soon Intersect

The Transformers series could merge with the G.I. Joe franchise as promised at the end of the last Transformers film which was released last summer.

Two popular toy lines from the 1980’s, G.I. Joe and Transformers, will be getting an upcoming picture that will be a fusion of both franchises. Henry Golding, who appeared in the 2021 box-office belly flop, Snake Eyes, has confirmed the possibility that Paramount Pictures is still interested in the idea which was highlighted during the end credits of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

One possible setback could be the box-office numbers of previous G.I. Joe films. 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was only a moderate success with $150 million in domestic ticket sales and a “B+” CinemaScore grade. 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation was a more modest hit that earned an even better “A-” CinemaScore but with only $122 million in domestic ticket sales, this series was certainly not box-office gold. But, some of the Transformers films have been hugely successful and Paramount may be looking at long term prospects that could arise from the combination of the ideas and actors from both sets of action films. So, Golding could be right and a crossover film could, indeed, be a possibility.

This aforementioned crossover project had been originally planned for a 2025 release but the strikes that occurred last year put the brakes on those particular plans for the time being. While audiences wait to see if this project will come into fruition, there is an animated movie with Scarlett Johansson, Transformers One, coming to theaters on September 13th, just a week after Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opens. There may be “more than meets the eye” in terms of how those two films will face off at the box-office going up against one another just a week apart.

Transformers: Rise of the Beats made a respectable $157 million domestically but its real gold came from the overseas grosses where it earned an additional $281 million. In terms of the crossover project, though, Golding thinks Paramount has a “grand grand” plan for the crossover series that could translate into big bucks at the box-office.

Whatever Paramount has in store for audiences in the next few years, it would be great to see these two popular toy lines get merged into a successful action picture. The Transformers and G.I. Joe films have a built in audience and people were applauding at the end credits last summer when the idea of a crossover project was teased in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. It feels like it’s time for a movie based on boys’ toys to do just as well as the female-heavy Barbie did last summer and this crossover movie could be just the ticket.
