CHARLIE’S ANGELS 3: McG Could Direct a Third Film in Popular Movie Series from the Early 2000’s

McG Wouldn’t Mind Reuniting with Old Stars for a Charlie’s Angels 3

When asked about the prospect of another Charlie’s Angels film, director McG said he’d possibly be willing to do one if the original actresses were on board.

In 2019, a reboot of Charlie’s Angels bombed at the box-office with a mere $17 million domestic take. However, it did pretty well overseas with $55 million and suggests that there could still be life in the franchise, especially if Sony returned to the Charlie’s Angels films from the early 2000’s. Those movies were huge hits but there was never a third movie, possibly because of the big budget of the second one in relation to its box-office grosses. Now, director McG has come out with the possibility that if Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu were to return and the script was right, he could direct Charlie’s Angels 3.

2000’s Charlie’s Angels was a box-office sensation. It received an “A-” CinemaScore. There was even a song from Destiny’s Child attached to the movie called “Independent Women Part 1.” That film made $125 million domestically and $138 million internationally. It co-starred Tom Green, Sam Rockwell and Bill Murray (who played Bosley). The second movie came out in 2003, replaced Bill Murray with Bernie Mac, and was called Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. It crossed $100 million in the U.S. and Canada but did a nice $158 million overseas which pretty much meant it made the same as the first movie, more or less. The second one cost about $30 million more to make, though and had a slightly lower “B+” CinemaScore. For whatever reason, a third movie was never made.

These Charlie’s Angels films from the early 2000’s featured end credit sequences with outtakes played to the great songs. “All the Small Things” by Blink-182 and “Any Way you Want it” by Journey. A third movie would offer the opportunity for more great outtakes played to another popular old song.

Drew Barrymore has stated that she would be “all in” for a third Charlie’s Angels film and, a few years back, she reunited with the stars Liu and Diaz. Unfortunately, Diaz has fallen out of the limelight and may not be up for the return. But, who knows? If these three “angels” got back together again, it could make for big box-office returns. Twenty years is an awfully long time to wait, though. But, Top Gun: Maverick proved that it’s never too late to make a sequel audiences would love. McG could just have a big box-office prospect on his hands, especially if all three female stars agree to come back. The biggest question would have to be: Who would play Bosley this time out? That’s a question I, for one, would love to see answered. McG also added that he could possibly pass the “torch” to another director as well for a third film, but fans would most likely prefer to see McG direct it.
