SPACEBALLS 2 (2027): Upcoming Comedy Sequel 40 Years in the Making Scores Release Date

Amazon MGM Sets Release Date for Spaceballs 2
Amazon MGM has set an April 23, 2027 release date for its highly anticipated space comedy sequel, Spaceballs 2.
Josh Gad’s production, Spaceballs 2, which is to be directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar), has set a release date by Amazon MGM. It’s April 23, 2027. Star Wars fans will be reveling in this summer’s tentpole from Disney, The Mandalorian and Grogu, and that summer movie may be spoofed in the upcoming 2027 parody that will be Spaceballs 2.
The first Spaceballs came out in the summer of 1987. Now, with a release date almost 40 years after the original film’s debut, the new sequel will be premiering to enthusiastic crowds. Fans of the first film couldn’t be more excited. While this summer’s other hugely anticipated movie, the new Scary Movie spoof picture, will be making fun of horror movies, the new Spaceballs should poke fun at the science-fiction genre in a similar fashion.
Back in the cast of the Spaceballs franchise for the next run will be the sequel’s stars, Daphne Zuniga, Rick Moranis and Mel Brooks (who directed the first movie), all of whom appeared in the 1987 picture.
Don’t expect a guaranteed box-office hit from Greenbaum to come out in April 2027 just yet. This forthcoming movie will have to be edited, finalized and shown to test audiences and critics to ensure it has what it takes to do as well at the box-office as it could, given its pedigree of famous actors and themes.
Keke Palmer will be one of the new additions to the Spaceballs saga’s cast. It is said Lewis Pullman and Bill Pullman (from the 1987 movie) will also be featured in Greenbaum’s proposed laugh-every-minute comedy. The Naked Gun reboot did extremely well financially and critically last summer which bodes well for spoof movies and for Spaceballs 2 which is poised to do at least decent business at the box-office regardless of its actual quality.
Many people will miss the now deceased John Candy who played in the first Spaceballs film in a role based on Star Wars‘ Chewbacca. It is not updated yet as to whether or not Candy’s absence in the new sequel will be explained or whether or not the role will be recast.
Amazon MGM plans on getting a jump start to the summer movie season with the late April 2027 release date for Spaceballs 2. There have been 40 years of science-fiction movies since the original film that could serve as targets in Spaceballs 2, and we can’t wait to see which ones will be poked fun at in Greenbaum’s upcoming sequel. Mel Brooks will be reprising his role as Yogurt, a character based on the original Yoda (from The Empire Strikes Back, etc.), in the upcoming spoof due in April 2027.
