Josh O’Connor To Star in Upcoming Film

Josh O’Connor has been cast in director Kelly Reichardt‘s upcoming movie, The Mastermind, which will be a heist picture set around the time of Vietnam.

It’s been quite a year for Josh O’Connor so far. He starred in a juicy leading role in a movie that was generally well-received called La Chimera and he played opposite Zendaya in the popular sports drama, Challengers. Pretty soon his latest film, Lee, will be released where O’Connor stars with the incomparable Kate Winslet. Also on the horizon is writer/director Kelly Reichardt’s The Mastermind, a high-concept art heist film that will test O’Connor’s ability to play a complex role within the upcoming picture.

Reichardt recently directed Oscar-nominee Michelle Williams in the hit A24 indie film, Showing Up. This filmmaker has a knack for creating big films with small characters but with O’Connor on board this latest project, there is likely to be the possibility of major mainstream crossover appeal for The Mastermind. Reichardt is, perhaps, known best for her film, First Cow, which was one of the most ambitious films of 2019.

O’Connor’s work in Challengers was widely praised and Oscar buzz surrounding his performance has been circulating since this spring when the movie was released. O’Connor brought depth to his performance in the tennis picture and wowed audiences with his work in the film. Many people admired O’Connor in La Chimera as well which divided audiences in certain ways but it was almost unanimous that O’Connor’s performance helped make the movie so intriguing.

MUBI will be backing Reichardt and O’Connor’s upcoming project. MUBI is the company behind the new Demi Moore movie, The Substance, which has emerged as one of the most-talked about films of 2024 thus far. That Moore film also stars Margaret Qualley in a performance that has Academy Award nomination buzz surrounding it as well.

It is also noteworthy that O’Connor will co-star in the upcoming Knives Out mystery, Wake Up Dead Man. The actor is emerging as one of the most in-demand actors working today and he could just wind up with an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Challengers come nomination announcement time. He is also known for playing Prince Charles on the hit series, “The Crown.”

With the surely intriguing efforts of Reichardt and O’Connor backing up the upcoming film, people are also anticipating the announcement of the rest of the cast of The Mastermind. It is the type of heist movie that audiences tend to look forward to and with the artistic flair of Reichardt, the film is sure to be one of the most anticipated movies that is currently on the horizon.
